Just before the year ends, a last short post from me. All packed up and ready to go, I’ll leave tomorrow morning early, to catch the most of the new year’s day silence on the roads. I should be arriving in the late evening at my hotel near Kalmar, Sweden, roughly a 1200 Km drive. I hope all will go well and I’ll be tweeting during the trip and should be posting pictures frequently.

On a administrative note, I have finally managed to launch my Skanvas page, a project dedicated to the sky and clouds above us. Read all about it here: http://skanvas.basdriver.nl/about/ and you can find the main site here: http://skanvas.basdriver.nl/ And while we’re at the subject of pictures, I have also opened a Flickr page for my pictures, you can find it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/basdriver/

Have a fantastic new year everyone! I’ll see you on the other side of new year’s eve.

Basil.

As I’m listening to the new release from Mr. Bitterness and the Guilty Pleasures, I have immediately added this album as a new album tip here on my blog. A review will follow later, I hope to get to it before I leave for Sweden but if not, it’ll be the very first thing to be posted after my return. In the mean time, just go and have a listen! It has been well worth the wait!

My musical year 2011: A brief overview and a top 15.

~

As this year comes to an end, I can look back at a eventful year. From being laid of at the 1st of January, just to being re-hired by the same company 3 months later. To a year in which my perspective of music, musicians, the music industry and all that comes with it, was completely changed. But also the attempt to re-launch my blog, the many new friends at Twitter and Facebook, many new experiences at work and… (…) No, that is to early to mention just yet. :-) All in all, a lot happened. But above all, it was music and Twitter that changed so much for me. The discovery of the indie scene around Twitter, Bandcamp, Facebook and all the other social media and music sources, gives the opportunity for music lovers to get in touch with music much deeper then the commercial scene would ever be able to provide.

With music having been so important this year and with so much new music being found by me, a “top 10″ of some sorts becomes almost impossible to avoid. (more…)

Days continue to pass by, one at a time but many in numbers. Time flies, as they say. Plans emerge constantly in my mind, but not that much makes it to a end result. Same so with this blog, bit by bit it grows slowly but the constant struggle to get things done with limited skills, makes for a slow progress.
A secondary project I want to set up had a brief moment of nearing completion, but server problems on the domain for it, means that it’s for now delayed for a unknown time, as it’s out of my hands. The idea, a daily picture of the sky, either from that very day or from my archive, is inspired heavily by Rothko Everywhere from my Twitter friend James Fahy.  I’m still contemplating if I’ll limit the project to 1 year (365 days) or that I’ll just continue and see where it goes. I also wonder if I’ll be able to keep it going on a daily basis during this coming January when I spend some weeks in Sweden, as I’ll need internet access obviously and international data roaming is very expensive in Europe. So this project for now is yet again in delay as I consider further steps and await developments with the server. :-(

Mute Words – A masterpiece by Leonardo Rosado.

First release.

Leonardo‘s new label “Heart and Soul” gives a new approach to the release of music and poetry. It’s first release “Mute Words” from which I was fortunate to receive 1 of the first 50 limited edition copies, makes a exciting promise for what this label is all about. The music takes you on a journey on which the poetry in the accompanied book gets even more meaning and depth. I can’t help to be reminded of a quote from the great Edgar Alan Poe, that is used on “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” from The Alan Parsons Project:

It is now 1831, and as always I am absorbed with a delicate thought. It is how poetry has indefinite sensations, to which end music is an essential. Since the comprehension of sweet sound is our most indefinite conception, music, when combined with a pleasurable idea, is poetry. Music without the idea is simply music. Without music or an intriguing idea, colour becomes pallor, man becomes carcass, home becomes catacomb, and the dead are but for a moment motionless.

It seems to fit precisely the idea behind this project, a combination of music and poetry, linked with each other by it’s indefinite sensations.

Sean, for me, your music, including 62204, has the ability to have a trance effect, while fully conscious I can sink in to it completely. There where I love Drew’s sounds to dream away one, yours put me in a entirely different state of mind. I had similar effects with the actual trance house back in the 90s and you can’t really call that soothing music either, though it still works that way. Can’t explain it but I love it. :-)
(Right now I’m to much distracted by other things so the effect is less intense but it still gives me peace of mind. Not been feeling to well lately, mentally, I should indulge in some music some more to put things back on track, empty the mind, clear the head and start over…)

Mini Review: Waning Gibbous By Tangram.

Not planning on doing this often, as I’m not expert enough to write real reviews. So please see this as an expression of my personal experience when hearing this album for the first time.

I pre-ordered the album Waning Gibbous by Tangram some time ago and was so fortunate to receive the download link yesterday. I loaded it into iTunes and started playing it this morning.
The very first track already blew me away. It’s retro and modern at the same time. Crisp sounds and beats, striking melodies, throughout the album it only becomes better. The title track, Waning Gibbous, is possibly the best track of the album, but I love all tracks so it is hard to pick a favorite.
There are clear influences from my favorite synthesizer artists like Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. But not at any point does it become ‘copied’, it’s unique and new, modern but with it’s roots deep in what I believe is the best musical instrument ever invented, the synthesizer. Anyone who likes synthesizer music, will love this album, and in fact, all of Tangram’s music.

I will attempt to further expend this review later, I need to listen to he album a few more times, each listen will bring more surprises. A work of art isn’t experienced with one visit, it needs as many as it can get. :-)
